The Board of Regents annually recognizes exceptional teachers from TSUS member institutions with the Regents' Teacher Award. Regents' Teachers are selected based on their outstanding performance as educators, contributions to the development of courses and use of innovative teaching methods, among other criteria. Winners maintain the title of "Regents' Teacher" for the duration of their service within TSUS. Liu is the eighth recipient from Texas State.

Liu came to Texas State in 2008, subsequently receiving numerous awards for her dedication to teaching, including the Everette Swinny Faculty Senate Excellence in Teaching Award, the Presidential Distinction Award for Excellence in Teaching, the College Achievement Award for Excellence in Teaching and has been nominated for the Piper Professor Award by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation.

During her career at Texas State, she has taught more than 10 undergraduate and graduate courses and mentored more than 300 students. Liu established a summer camp to provide services to children on the autism spectrum, creating opportunities for more than 400 Texas State students to apply concepts learned in the classroom to a real-life setting.

Liu earned her B.S. in physical education from Beijing Sport University, a master's in exercise science from Boise State University and Ph.D. in movement science from the University of Texas at Austin.
