Fun & Fit 4 Life Camp
Fun & Fit 4 Life Camp
The mission of the Fun & Fit 4 Life program is to provide innovative and creative experiences in positive youth development, physical activity, health, and college readiness activities to children from low-income households residing in the San Marcos community.
In 2009, Dr. Karen Meaney joined the faculty at Texas State University and continued her outreach with children and families living in low income communities. Dr. Meaney partnered with the San Marcos Housing Authority (SMHA) to provide our city’s most vulnerable children unique opportunities to engage in positive youth development experiences. Children living in low income families are at higher risk for obesity, diabetes, and academic failure as compared to children living in middle and high income families. Fun & Fit 4 Life attempts to combat these disparities. Our program is supported solely on grants, donations, and volunteers. There is no cost to the campers for participation.
At Fun & Fit 4 Life counselors and campers are asked to engage and demonstrate CPR at all times!
In addition to learning about the importance of physical activity, health, and college readiness we also believe in the importance of character education. Campers and counselors cooperate with everyone, participate in all activities, and demonstrate respect each for others and themselves. We encourage CPR behavior not only at camp but also at home, school, and the community.
Points of Pride
Since the summer of 2010 Fun & Fit 4 Life has provided summer day camps (2-3 weeks in duration) at no expense to over 250 youth (5-17 years of age) participants. Texas State University students preparing to be teachers and coaches provide fun-filled physical activity experiences for our campers. Counselors working at the Texas State Center for P-16 Initiatives engage the campers in exciting college-readiness activities.
Throughout the school year, Fun & Fit 4 Life sponsors physical activity and wellness events in the community. Fun & Fit 4 Life also assisted in securing city funding to improve the Conway neighborhood park so children and families could be physically active in a safe neighborhood environment.
The Fun & Fit 4 Life program has been fortunate to receive support from numerous community agencies, including:
- San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District
- Department of Health & Human Performance, Texas State University
- Recreational Center, Texas State University
- Center for P-16 Initiatives, Texas State University
- Texas State University Bookstore
- Grande Communications
We hope to secure grants and donations to support the Fun & Fit 4 Life every summer and offer children the opportunity to participate throughout the school year.
