Athletic Training Summer Camps

June 7-10, 2017 (Beginner)
June 11-14, 2017 (Advanced)
Our Athletic Training Summer Camp, hosted by the Department of Health and Human Performance at Texas State University, provides high school students with a wide variety of opportunities to learn athletic training and emergency care skills from the athletic training faculty and staff at Texas State University.
As a result of the strong interest and rapid growth in the number of campers who attended our AT Summer Camp the past several summers, we will again offer two separate camp sessions in 2017—a Beginner’s Session and an Advanced Session. Our Beginner’s Camp will be held June 7-10, 2017 (Wednesday afternoon to Saturday noon), while our Advanced Camp will be held June 11-14, 2017 (Sunday afternoon to Wednesday noon).
The cost of attending either camp session in 2017 will again be $395 per student—we have charged the same amount to attend our camp for the last three years! This all-inclusive price covers camp tuition, all meals from on-campus dining facilities, three nights lodging in Texas State University residence halls, all instructional materials and supplies, and a camp T-shirt.
BEGINNER LEVEL CAMP SESSION (JUNE 7-10, 2017)
The first session, a Beginner Level camp, will be held from Wednesday, June 7, 2017 through Saturday, June 10, 2017 (4 days, 3 nights). Students do not need any formal education but may or may not have been athletic training students and have clinical experience at their respective high schools. Instructional topics will include techniques of prevention, recognition and immediate care of athletic-related injuries taught by a faculty of nationally certified (ATC) and Texas licensed (LAT) athletic trainers. Many hours will be devoted to the actual practice of bandaging, wrapping, and taping techniques needed by students in order to assist their school’s athletic trainer(s) in the future. In order to accommodate students with previous experience in taping and wrapping, there will be beginner and advanced taping sessions for the Beginner Level camp.
ADVANCED LEVEL CAMP SESSION (JUNE 11-14, 2017)
The second session, an Advanced Level camp, will be held from Sunday, June 11 through Wednesday, June 14, 2017 (4 days, 3 nights). Students who qualify for enrollment in the Advanced Level camp will need to have completed at least TSATA’s Sports Medicine I course, a Health Science course that may be offered by their school, or completed Texas State’s Beginner Athletic Training Summer Camp. Evidence of enrollment/completion of this course(s) must accompany the application and/or be demonstrated through the submission of a high school transcript or a letter from their school counselor or course instructor.
The purpose of our Advanced Camp is to increase the athletic training student’s formal education in athletic training, as well as clinical skill level. Topics of instruction will include an in-depth study of the prevention, recognition and care of athletic injuries as they might occur in high school athletes. The Advanced Level program will be taught by nationally certified (ATC) and Texas licensed (LAT) athletic trainers employed at Texas State University. Special emphasis will be placed on the latest procedures for concussion diagnosis and clinical management, hands-on evaluation of musculoskeletal injuries, and advanced techniques of taping, bandaging and bracing injuries, and state-of-the-art sports medicine research equipment and techniques.
Enrollment will be limited to a maximum of 75 campers each session in order to ensure the best instruction possible, so please register early.
The early registration deadline Beginner Level AT Camp is Monday, May 8, 2017; all camp registrations sent by U.S. Mail must be postmarked no later than May 8th.
The early registration deadline Advanced Level AT Camp is Friday, May 12, 2017; all camp registrations sent by U.S. Mail must be postmarked no later than May 12th.
NOTE: A Late Registration Fee of $45 will be charged after the registration deadline for signing up for your specific camp session, increasing the total cost of camp from $395 to $440 per person. This additional fee reflects the increased cost per night of campus housing that will be charged to our camp by Texas State University for any housing reservations made after this deadline. When three or more students from the same high school register together, they each will each receive a $40 discount, reducing the individual registration fee from $395 to $355 per camper. Late registration fees will still apply.
In 2017, NHMI will once again offer the Letendre Student Athletic Training Summer School Scholarship. This scholarship provides funds for students interested in careers in the sports medicine field of athletic training to attend a summer camp.
The scholarship recipient(s) may select the camp s/he attends. The award will have a $750 cap. Scholarship application deadline is April 1.
The 2016 Scholarship winners were Adriana Jimenez and Lincoln Revill. Ms. Jimenez attended Jack C. Hays High School in Buda, Texas. Mr. Lincoln attended Frost Independent School District in Frost, Texas. Both students had a great experience at their respective camps.
